Highway Run!!!! (Journey style)

So how to summarize the last two days.. It will be hard.  As you may know we missed our flight and got a hotel for the evening.  The next day we woke to having about 10 hours to spare before the flight at 8:30pm.  We had one thing to do:  Visit the local mall and kill some time.  After a few hours we were done. About 3:00 we called our cab to pick us up and bring us back to grab our bags from the hotel and go to the airport.  A total trip of maybe 7 miles and  4 hours of time to spare.  Plenty of time, right? No! Apparently there were 7 tractor trailer trucks all in major accidents causing a gridlock around the entire airport.
As our driver inched along it became clear we would not make the flight for the second night in a row.  Panic set in, and we did what any logical person would do.  Freak Out!  Despite our driver advising not too, Tony and Katie ran out of the cab and started making there way on foot by way of the Jersey turnpike to get to the hotel to get our bags and see if there were any other clear paths from there that a new shuttle could take us.  If they did they would call us… After about 10 minutes Corrine, Mike and I decided to pay the driver and follow on foot.  Sitting still was not an option.  We were not moving and we had less than an hour to get there.  In some ways running along the Jersey turnpike felt better than sitting in a car gridlocked.  In about 5 minutes we made it to the hotel and got our bags with Tony and Katie.  As we started running the last 2 miles on foot our driver pulled up in his car and said he knew a shortcut.  We jumped in and off we went.  (A minor detail was that he was driving a blacked out Escalade SUV with 20 inch rims, it was actually cheaper than a yellow cab)  He screamed around a few corners, backed up an onramp and even jumped a curb.  Traffic was around every corner.  After his maneuvering we suddenly realized we were on airport property with maybe 20 minutes to spare.  He saved us.  We gave him a pretty good tip and ran to the check in gate.  With about 15 minutes to spare we checked in.  Obviously there were a few problems (why not just expect it at this point), but we had an attendant help us and we went thought the security gate.
We waited in line at the gate (Mike bought an entire pizza) and we sat in our seats. We were there. But then we sat some more.  And sat some more.  Then an announcement:  “The computers are down in Houston, we cant leave until they come up.  We’ll keep you posted.”  They turned on the TV’s, handed out granola bars, and water.  2 hours later we left.  Yes!
After a 13 hour flight we are in an airport in New Delhi, India.  Our next leg of our flight is not until 1pm tomorrow and its midnight.  Everyone but me is sleeping in the terminal waiting.  The airport is nice but its still an airport.  For now we wait.  An eventful day for sure.  We are still processing it.
Sorry for the  long post but I felt the details were needed this time.  I can only hope the rest of the posts can be explained by pictures only.

  3. Unbelievable! WOW This is why I don't have a passport. Hope the rest of the trip is only full of planned "events", although it's great reading for the rest of us. You can't make this stuff up! PS:I sent the escalade...I have the helicopter on standby for the events to come when trying to get home...haha

  4. As others have already said, WOW!! It is hard to fathom all that happened even BEFORE you left. Hopefully you guys had a good sleep. It's almost 6:30 AM in Nepal as you are 10 hours ahead of us. It's 8:30 PM here. We are all cheering you on to more fun (lots more) than you had in NJ. People probably thought you were celebrities in your Cadillac SUV with smoked windows, driving over curbs and such. At least you rode in style. More importantly, you made it on your flight without suffering a heart attack. Enjoy the coming days. Your weather looks good - 70s and sunshine. Take care!!
